IN MEMORIAM
CHATAWA A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Audrey Mae Kihnemann, SSND, was celebrated Friday, June 10, at St. Teresa Church. Sister Kihnemann died Tuesday, June 7, at St. Mary of the Pines. Her ministry was teaching primary grade children in Arkansas, Alabama, and as a teacher of English as a second language to primary children at Notre Dame School in Japan. She returned to the States in 1971 and continued her educational ministry as teacher and counselor in secondary schools in Lousiana.
Since 2005, Sister Kihnemann was a member of the St. Mary of the Pines Community. Burial took place in the Chatawa Cemetery.

PUEBLO, Colo. – A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Walter J. Smigiel, 93, was to be celebrated June 22 at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Pueblo.
He joined the Franciscan Order of the Assumption of BVM Province and was ordained on June 3, 1950. He volunteered to work among the African-Americans in Greenwood, Miss. In 1953, he founded St. Benedict the Moor Information Center in Indianola, Miss., which subsequently became a parish.
After 17 years of mission work among African-Americans and being involved in the Civil Rights Movement, Father Smigiel expressed a desire to work among Native Americans and Latinos. Permission was granted by the Provincial Superior. He was accepted by Bishop Charles Buswell, bishop of Pueblo, Colo., in January of 1971. His first assignment in the Pueblo diocese was at St. Mary Parish in Montrose, Colo., where he helped found the Mexican-American Development Association, a civil rights organization. He served in Colorado until he retired from the active ministry of priesthood.

IN MEMORIAM
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sister Cecilia Mahriam of the Holy Family, OCD, died May 5. She was 92. She was a professed Carmelite nun who had been a Chapter Sister at the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Little Flower in Jackson since Jan. 28, 1998.
Sr. Cecilia Mahriam entered religious life in 1951 at the age of 27, eventually professing solemn vows on Oct. 15, 1954, at the Carmel by the Sea in Long Beach, Calif.
Before her transfer to Jackson Carmel, Sister Mahraim visited numerous Carmelite monasteries with a special interest in preserving Russian liturgy with the goal of eventually returning it to Russia once the church could freely practice again. While in residence at Jackson Carmel, Sister Mahriam helped organize a Lebanese society in Mississippi.
NOTE: A Funeral Mass for Sister Mahraim will be celebrated at the Carmelite Monastery in Jackson Thursday, June 16, at 10 a.m. followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Gluckstadt. A reception will follow at St. Joseph Parish.

Pentecost Sunday in Natchez
During the tri-centennial celebration in Natchez this year which represents the history of Catholicism in Natchez over the years, St. Mary Basilica will host a series of Catholic heritage tours of Catholic sites in Natchez, a liturgical celebration of Pentecost on May 15 and Lessons & Carols in December.
The principal celebrant for the Pentecost celebration will be Bishop Joseph Kopacz. The St. Mary choir under the direction of Dr. Doherty will provide the music. Before the entrance procession there will be a proclamation of the Pentecost event from the Acts of the Apostles. The entrance procession will include, in addition to the normal liturgical roles, a series of banners symbolizing the coming of the Holy Spirit. Children and youth groups will also have a part in the celebration.
A light reception will follow in the Family Life Center. In mid-afternoon the parish will host an open house to showcase some aspects of the history of Catholicism in Southwest Mississippi.

In Memoriam
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Dorothy Frankrone, OSU, 95, was celebrated on , April 12. She died Thursday, April 7, at Sacred Heart Home in Louisville.
Sister Frankrone taught at St. Mary Parish school in Jackson from 1952 to 1956. She taught elementary grades in Louisville and in Evansville, Indiana. In the early 1970s, she was an instructor in the education department of Bellarmine College (now University).
In retirement she served as a Eucharistic minister to patients at Suburban Hospital. Burial took place in St. Michael Cemetery.

IN MEMORIAM
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Jude Marie Piazza, a native of Vicksburg, was celebrated Feb. 22 at Mercy Center in St. Louis, Mo. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
Sister Piazza attended St. Francis Xavier Academy in Vicksburg and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1954 and professed perpetual vows in 1960.
She served as a nursing instructor at St. John’s School of Nursing and nursing supervisor at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo., staff nurse in ER and Coronary Care Unit from 1972-1977 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Vicksburg, pastoral care chaplain from  until 1992 at hospitals in Springfield, Mo., Fort Smith, Ark., Independence, Kansas, Daphne, Ala., and Hot Springs, Ark..
She was an avid practitioner and instructor in energetic healing and outstanding and influential in promoting holistic health.

IN MEMORIAM
SCRANTON, Pa. – Sister Mary Hugh Placilla, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Jan. 17 at Regional Hospital in Scranton. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 23 in Scranton. Interment was at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
In the Diocese of Jackson Sister Placilla served as director of religious education and pastoral minister at Philadelphia Holy Rosary Mission. She also served in schools in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, New York and Deleware. From 2010 until the time of her death, Sister Placilla was a prayer minister at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton. JACKSON – Catholic Charities’ Catholic Day at the Capitol set for Thursday, Feb. 11, in Jackson. Activities this year will include in-depth discussions on effective advocacy and how the state can better serve children, families and those with mental health issues.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

MEDICAL INTERPRETERS TRAINING
