In memoriam: Sister Dorothy (Dorothy Lorraine) Olinger

Sister Dorothy (Dorothy Lorraine) Olinger died on Sept. 18, 2022 at Ascension

St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Ind.  Sister was born on July 3, 1933 in Chicago and was one of twelve children of Madona (Coonrad) and Peter Olinger.  Sr. Dorothy graduated from St. Gregory High School in Chicago and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Mo., in 1952.

     After initial formation, Sr. Dorothy served as a teacher at St. Theresa School in New Orleans (1953-1956), St. Thomas Home in Birmingham, Ala. (1956-1963), St.  Vincent School in Donaldsonville, La. (where she also served as principal, 1963-1969), St. Francis de Sales School in Lake Zurich, Ill. (1969-1973), Cathedral School in Natchez, Miss. (1973-1985), St. Joseph School in East St. Louis, Ill. (1985-1987), St. James Major School in Prichard, Ala. (1995-2001), and Our Lady of the Valley Center in Gloverville, S.C. (2014-2016).  Sister received a BA in English from Marillac College in St. Louis, Mo. (1963) and an MA in Elementary Math Education from the University of Detroit in Michigan (1978).  Sister also served as a Housemother at St. Elizabeth Home in New Orleans, La. (1956), Computer Consultant at St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisc. (1987-1993), Registrar at St. Louise de Marillac High School in Northfield, Ill. (1993-1994), Docent at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. (2001-2003), Tutor-Aide at St. Therese School in Jackson, Miss. (2003-2008) and Receptionist at Catholic Charities in Nashville, Tenn. (2008-2014) until she came to Seton Residence in Evansville in 2016 to serve in the Ministry of Prayer.

     A Wake Service was held on Monday, September 26, 2022 in the Seton Residence Chapel followed by the Mass of Christian Burial; internment at St. Joseph Cemetery.  Sister was preceded in death by her sisters Patricia LoCoco, Mary Catherine Drollinger, Margaret Sellars, Elizabeth Keller and Elaine Tipton and her brothers William, Thomas, John and Joseph Olinger and she is survived by her brother Michael Olinger and her sister Donna Talley, nieces and nephews, her Sisters in Community and many friends.

CLARKSDALE – The St. Elizabeth School celebrated the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Mary’s birthday – on Thursday, Sept. 8 with a procession. God’s gift of His Son to humankind was preceded by another precious gift — the gift of the Mother of His Son. Mary brought forth Jesus into the world. YOUTH EVENTS
DIOCESE Two scholarships are available to college students in the Diocese of Jackson. The Bishop Brunini Memorial Scholarship was established to be used specifically for tuition assistance for undergraduate or advanced studies at any accredited Catholic college or university. There are no specific restrictions for the field of study.
The Stella Schmidt Memorial Scholarship was established to be used specifically for tuition assistance for advanced studies in theology or religious education at Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama.
Full and part-time graduate students are eligible to apply for the scholarship. If the recipient is currently enrolled in the Department of Faith Formation’s Pastoral Ministries Program and receives tuition assistance from the diocese and their school or parish, scholarship money can be used to offset the amount of tuition paid out-of-pocket by the individual.

Papa elogia dedicación de Gorbachov a armonía, fraternidad, y progreso

CIUDAD DEL VATICANO (CNS) – El papa Francisco ofreció sus oraciones y elogios por el expresidente soviético Mijaíl Gorbachov, quien murió a los 91 años el 30 de agosto en Moscú después de una larga enfermedad.

En un telegrama enviado a la única hija de Gorbachov, Irina Virganskaya, el papa manifestó sus “más sentidas condolencias” a ella, a todos los miembros de la familia, y a “quienes lo veían como un estimado estadista”. El Vaticano publicó el telegrama el 31 de agosto.

El Santo Padre expresó su cercanía espiritual durante “este momento de dolor por la muerte de su honorable padre, Mijaíl”.

“Recordando con gratitud su clarividente compromiso por la armonía y la fraternidad entre los pueblos, así como por el progreso de su propio país en una época de cambios importantes”, el Santo Padre ofreció sus oraciones de sufragio, “invocando la paz eterna, en nombre del Dios bueno y misericordioso”.

Gorbachov era conocido por sus políticas de “glasnost” (apertura) y “perestroika” (reestructuración), que prepararon el escenario para la desintegración de la Unión Soviética y el regreso de la libertad religiosa.

Desempeñó un papel fundamental en el fin de la Guerra Fría, que había exacerbado una larga tensión entre los Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética, así como en la caída del Telón de Acero, que dividió a Europa en dos mundos políticos separados del este y el oeste.

En 1990, Gorbachov fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de la Paz por desempeñar un papel de liderazgo en: la promoción de la paz, particularmente en la sustitución de la confrontación por la negociación; permitir que muchos estados nacionales europeos recuperen su libertad; ralentizar la carrera armamentista; y apoyar el desarme y el control de armamentos, según el Comité Noruego del Nobel.

Dirigió la Unión Soviética desde 1985 hasta su disolución en 1991.

Permaneció activo en política exterior y enfatizó la necesidad de soluciones políticas sobre la acción militar. Estableció la Fundación Gorbachov sin fines de lucro en 1992 para abordar los estudios políticos y socioeconómicos internacionales; en 1993, fundó la organización ambientalista Green Cross International.

En una conferencia de prensa previa a una charla que dio en la Universidad Benedictina de Lisle, Illinois, en 1999, Gorbachov elogió al entonces papa Juan Pablo II por trabajar para encontrar soluciones pacíficas a las tensiones políticas.

“El papel de la religión es muy importante”, había indicado en dicha ocasión. “El papa ha dicho que el mundo necesita una nueva política y un nuevo orden mundial. Tiene que haber soluciones más humanas, más justas, y más pacíficas”.

Viniendo de un país donde la religión estuvo prácticamente prohibida durante la mayor parte del siglo XX, Gorbachov explicó en su charla que uno de sus primeros logros fue proporcionar la libertad de religión, que dijo que era un derecho que debía respetarse.

Bajo el liderazgo de Gorbachov, la Unión Soviética aprobó una ley de libertad religiosa en 1990, que hizo retroceder décadas de restricciones comunistas a las iglesias, incluyendo aquellas contra la instrucción religiosa y la libertad de asociación. Legalizó la Iglesia Católica Ucraniana de 5 millones de miembros y restauró algunas de sus iglesias y otras propiedades.

Día de St. James en Tupelo

TUPELO – La fiesta de St. James, Patrono de la comunidad, fue celebrada el Julio 25 con una peregrinación en el estacionamiento seguida de una Misa bilingue celebrada por los padres Timothy Murphy, Henry Shelton y Cesar Sanchez con la asistencia del diácono Carlos Solá. En la Misa, las señoras Mitzi Bristow Moore y Sue Repult, dos parroquianas de la comunidad Anglo, recibieron un reconocimiento por ser las fundadoras de la iglesia cuando, antes que la misma parroquia fuera construida, ellas comenzaron al tener Misas en sus casas.
