CANTON — Ivory Harris (left photo, left) and a Holy Child Jesus student demonstrate the art of Capoeira at the Community and Family Day held recently at the school. Students study Capoeira on Wednesday afternoons. Rufus Mapp (above photo, center), master drummer, and Adib Owens-Sabir, percussionist, demonstrate various African drumming techniques at the event. Capoeira is a martial art form that originated in Africa and survived throughout the Brazilian slave trade era. The principles taught through Capoeira include respect for elders, high academic aspirations, good work, exercise and nutrition habits; citizenship, love and respect for people and property and development of mature behavior.
