Retreats focus on centering prayer, discernment, quiet

St. Richard Parish, Jackson
     “Centering Prayer Retreat and Renewal Day,” Saturday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Chichester Room.
     Centering Prayer assists the pray-er in learning the art of being in God’s presence without using images or words.
     Sister Therese Jacobs, BVM, a pastoral minister at St. Richard Parish, will lead the retreat. Cost is $10.

St. Mary of the Pines
Eight-day retreats — Cost is $425.
Five-day retreats — Cost is $300.
     Sister Dorez Mehrtens, new resident retreat director, is available for directed retreats, spiritual direction, and for facilitating prayer days and workshops for interested groups or churches.
     She is available for directed retreats Jan. 22-31, Feb. 15-28, and March 12-27. Sister Mehrtens may be contacted for specific days for a retreat at 601-783-3494.
     “Married Couples Retreat: Growing in the Fullness of Love,” Feb. 10-12.
     Pope John Paul II made a great offering to married couples through his teachings of love, marriage, and responsibility. He challenged all toward the selfless pursuit of what is best for the other person. This is a special weekend for married couples to explore the fullness of love to which all are called. There will be ample time for deep personal sharing, couples discernment, and prayer. Presenters Robin and Easton Hebert are experienced spiritual directors and retreat directors from Lafayette, La. Cost is $280 per couple.

The Dwelling Place
“Come to the Quiet,” March 9-11.
     Come, get away, be still and sort out your life under the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Experience God’s presence in the quiet and a personally guided prayer experience adapted to your needs.
Come for a weekends or schedule any length of time and dates at your convenience. Each weekend begins with 6:30 p.m. dinner. Donation: $150. Clare Van Lent, MACSp, will direct the retreat.

“Mardi Gras Drawdown,” Friday, Feb. 3, from 7 - 10 p.m. at Lee Home, Columbus. Tickets are $100 and admit two people. The grand prize is $2500 and there will be additional surprises and cash prizes, plus food, music, and fellowship.

“John of the Cross, Hope in our Darkness,” Friday-Saturday, Feb. 10-11.
     Though John of the Cross lived in the 16th century, he has left us a treasure in understanding the spiritual life and leading others in growth in prayer. As we struggle with the normal dry spells in prayer, John gives us deeper insight into that darkness and dryness, encouraging us in our desire for an ever deeper relationship with God.
    The presenter will be Father John Bohn, pastor of Starkville St. Joseph Parish and Macon Corpus Christi, a long-time student of John of the Cross. The retreat begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and will end at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cost is $100.
    “Jesus, the Eucharist and our Response,” March 2-4. Through a series of contemplations and reflections retreatants will be exposed to the richness of the Catholic tradition in looking at the central mysteries for the purpose of bringing them to a deeper level of response. Father Henry Shelton will be the presenter. Cost is $200.

Benedictine Center
    Private retreats. Call the Retreat Center office, 256-734-8302 for information or to schedule a private retreat. Private retreats are $75 first night, $50 each additional night. Meals are included.
Directed retreats are $105 first night, $80 each additional night. Meals are included.

    “Good Call: Learning the Way of Discernment,” Jan. 13-15. Listening for God’s call to service in the church is a challenge because of the noise and distractions that fill our daily lives.
This retreat will offer both men and women wisdom and practical pointers gathered from our Christian heritage that will assist in deepening one’s capacity for hearing God’s call in their lives.
Cost for private room is $195; shared rooms are $175 per person.

    “Introduction to Centering Prayer,” Jan. 20-22.
Centering Prayer is a method of Christian prayer rooted in the ancient Christian contemplative tradition. Its purpose is to foster a deeper intimacy with Christ through the silence and stillness of contemplative prayer. Private rooms and the ability to maintain silence are required. Limited enrollment. Cost is $195.
    “Listening to God in Holy Silence: A Cinema Retreat,” Jan. 27-29.
In this retreat, participants will pray and reflect with the film “Into Great Silence” (Director Philip Groning) which portrays the strict silent life of the Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse in France
    Sister Priscilla Cohen, OSB, will be the retreat director: Cost for private rooms is $195; shared rooms are $175 per person.

    “Welcoming All: Hospitality in the Rule of St. Benedict,” Feb. 17-19.
    This retreat will explore ways in which the Rule of St. Benedict establishes hospitality as a way of putting faith into action. Sister Mary McGehee, OSB, and Sister Therese Haydel, OSB, will direct the retreat. Cost for private rooms is $195; shared rooms are $175 per person.
