Blessing of throats
BOONEVILLE — In observance of the feast of St. Blaise, on Feb. 3, St. Francis of Assisi Parish will have the blessing of throats Sunday, Feb. 7, after the 11 a.m. Mass.
The parish will take up a special collection on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the 3:30 p.m. Mass and at the Ash Wednesday service, Feb. 17, for Catholic Charities of Northeast Mississippi in Vardaman.

Black History Month
CAMDEN — Sacred Heart Parish will begin its Black History Month celebration on Sunday, Feb. 7, with the Annual Day of Prayer for the African American Family. Parishioners are invited to wear African dress each Sunday in February.

Handbell workshop
CLEVELAND — Our Lady of Victories Parish has invited area handbell groups for a workshop Saturday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m. in the parish center. A luncheon and a 20-minute concert will follow.
Children and adults are invited to hear over 40 bell ringers play a variety of music. For information call Cindy Waters, 662-843-8063.
The Sav-A-Life Banquet will be held Thursday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the parish center. Alicia Williamson Garcia will be the guest speaker. Tables for eight can be purchased for $200. Individual tickets are complimentary.

Scripture study
COLUMBUS — Annunciation Parish will hold a Lenten Scripture Study on Wednesdays from 7 - 8:30 p.m. starting on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the activities center. The study will continue until March 24. Sign-up sheets will be in the atrium after all Masses Sundays, Feb. 7 and 14.
The theme of the study will be “Follow Me — Drawing Near to Jesus.” For information call 662-327-0201.

New church directory
CORINTH — A new church directory is being planned for all parishioners of Corinth St. James, Booneville St. Francis, Iuka St. Mary and Belmont.
Photographs of St. James’ parishioners will be taken Monday, Feb. 15, from 2 - 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall. There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the back of the church. There will be a follow-up day in early March for those who cannot schedule an appointment on Feb. 15.

February Fling
GREENVILLE — St. Joseph Parish will celebrate its February Fling Saturday, Feb. 13. Tickets are $100 for two people and includes a dinner, entertainment by “Sounds of the Time” and a $10,000 drawdown. Call 662-335-1160.

Fish dinners
GREENWOOD — Council 5267 of the Knights of Columbus will hold Lenten fish dinners (grilled, baked, fried) on Fridays from Feb. 19-March 25, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish center on Washington Street. Plates are $8 each, eat -in or take-out.

Liturgy committee
JACKSON — Holy Ghost Parish is asking leaders of all ministries to attend a committee meeting on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. in Drexel Hall. Those unable to attend are encouraged to ask a member to attend in their absence. Interested parishioners are also welcome to attend.
The Building Fund Committee will sponsor a bus trip to the Beau Rivage in Biloxi on Saturday, Feb. 13. Cost is $27. Deadline to turn in money is Feb. 7. The bus will depart from the Jackson Medical Mall at 10 a.m. and return at 10 p.m.
The parish’s Fat Tuesday celebration is set for Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 5 - 9 p.m. at the Jasper Complex, 3365 Medgar Evers Boulevard. Participants are asked to bring their favorite dish.

English, citizenship classes
JACKSON — The Immigration Clinic of Catholic Charities and Jackson Public Schools are inviting immigrants to attend classes to learn English and prepare for the citizenship test.
Jackson Public Schools will offer the six-week English classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 16-March 25, from 6 - 8:30 p.m. at 931 Highway 80, Suite 250, Jackson Enterprise Center.

Seven-week seminar
JACKSON — On Feb. 2, St. Therese Parish began a seven-week “Life in the Spirit” seminar on Tuesdays from 7 - 8 p.m. Topics to be discussed are: God’s Love; Salvation; New Life; Receiving God’s Gift; Empowerment; Sin in Our Life, and Growth and Transformation.

TPS for Haiti
JACKSON — The Immigration Clinic of Catholic Charities has announced that Haitian nationals can begin registering for Temporary Protection Status (TPS) benefits, if they were present in the United States on or before Jan. 12. The registration period will be effective until July 20, 2010, and the benefits will remain through July 22, 2011.

`Last Blast before Fast’
JACKSON — Holy Family Parish Ladies Guild will host its annual “Last Blast before the Fast” Mardi Gras Celebration Saturday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in the parish center. Cost is $5 per person.

National Day of Prayer
JACKSON — The National Day of Prayer for African-Americans and African families will be observed at Christ the King Parish on Sunday, Feb. 7. Families are invited to bring items from their homes/families (candles, family Bibles, crucifixes) to be blessed during Mass.

St. Joe drawdown
MADISON — St. Joseph School will hold its annual drawdown Saturday, Feb. 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $110 each with optional second chance insurance for $15 extra. For information call 601-898-4806.

Blessing of throats
NATCHEZ — On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7, Father David O’Connor, pastor of St. Mary Basilica, will bless throats after the Masses.
The Family Life Commission is inviting all married couples to a “Celebration of Marriage” Saturday, Feb. 13, at Natchez Eola Hotel ballroom beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a social.
Cost is $35 per couple and includes babysitting. All married couples will be honored, especially those celebrating 25, 50, and 60 plus years. Those planning to participate are asked to RSVP by Feb. 8 at 601-445-5616.

Lunch bunch meeting

Pancake breakfast
PORT GIBSON — St. Joseph Parish will host its monthly pancake breakfast Sunday, Feb. 7, after the 9 a.m. Mass. Breakfasts are $3 per plate or $10 per family. All proceeds will go to the Cemetery Trust Fund.

Spanish classes
SOUTHAVEN — Spanish classes will be offered at Christ the King Parish at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays (first level) and Thursdays (second level).
Council 7120 of the Knights of Columbus will serve its chili dinner on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. All you can eat plates are $6 for adults and $3 for children. Take out dinners and bulk tubs will be available.

St. James book club
TUPELO — St. James Parish book club will discuss Henri Nouwen’s classic, “Life of the Beloved,” on Monday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 10, at noon in the library. All adult parishioners are welcome. Reading the book beforehand is not required.

Mardi Gras dance
VICKSBURG — St. Mary Parish will have a Mardi Gras dance Friday, Feb. 12, from 8 p.m. - midnight in The Center, corner of second North and Main Street (formerly Baltes Gym).

Chicken spaghetti

The parish will host a Mardi Gras covered dish supper Saturday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a dish according to their last names: A-C, salad or appetizer; D-M, vegetable dish; N-W: dessert. The parish will provide the meat, drinks and king cakes.

First Friday fund-raiser
BOONEVILLE — St. Francis of Assisi Parish will host its first Friday fund-raiser spaghetti dinner on Feb 5, from 4 - 7 p.m. Dinner includes spaghetti, soft bread sticks, homemade coleslaw, choice of homemade dessert, and coffee, iced tea or water.
Tickets must be purchased before Feb. 1. Proceeds will benefit programs and services provided by the parish. Carry-outs will not be available.

Italian Festival
CLEVELAND — The fourth annual Italian Festival of Mississippi will be held Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, at the Bolivar County Expo Building.
On Friday, the festival will run from 4 - 11 p.m. with the “Funkmonsters” as the night entertainment. On Saturday the activities will continue from 9 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.

Bible study in Camden
CAMDEN — Sacred Heart Parish will have a Bible study Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 6:30 pm in the Family Center. All are welcome.
The parish Men’s Club is inviting all adult parishioners to watch the Super Bowl on a big screen on Sunday, Feb. 7, in Sacred Heart Hall. The celebration will begin at 4 p.m.

Mardi Gras drawdown
CLARKSDALE — St. Elizabeth Parish will hold its Mardi Gras drawdown Friday, Feb. 12, at the Coahoma Expo Building from 7:30 p.m. - midnight. Tickets are $100 each and allow two people into the event.
The grand prize is $10,000. Tickets are available at St. Elizabeth School or the parish office.

Retreat in Corinth
CORINTH — Father Henry Shelton will lead a retreat at St. James Parish Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13. On Friday, the talk will be from 5:30 - 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 - noon.

Bloomin’ Festival Arts
CULLMAN, Ala. — St. Bernard Prep School will host its 26th Annual Bloomin’ Festival Arts and Crafts Fair April 17-18. More than 150 artists and craftspeople will demonstrate and sell their work on the school grounds.

Cursillo retreat
FLOWOOD — The Cursillo Movement of the Diocese of Jackson is sponsoring a three-day retreat at St. Paul Parish Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 8-10, at 7 p.m. each night.
Father David Knight from Memphis will lead the retreat. A reception will follow after each session. Everyone is invited — those who have made a Cursillo and all who would like to know more about the Cursillo Movement.

FLOWOOD — St. Paul parishioners are invited to celebrate Father Brian Carroll’s 12 years of service as pastor Sunday, Jan. 31, after the 10:30 a.m. Mass in the Family Life Center.
Father Carroll has been appointed senior associate at Jackson St. Richard Parish and sacramental minister at Magee St. Stephen Parish.

Valentine’s Day breakfast
GREENVILLE — The men of Sacred Heart Parish will host their annual Valentine’s Day breakfast for the women of the parish on Sunday, Feb. 14, after the 9 a.m. Mass.
Parishioners are encouraged to bring old palms to the church on Sundays, Feb. 7 or 14, and put them in the boxes in the vestibule of the church. The palms will be burned for ashes for Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Baked goods bingo
GREENVILLE — The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary will host a baked goods bingo at the KC hall Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Anniversaries celebration
HERNANDO — Holy Spirit parishioners celebrating 25, 50 and 60th wedding anniversaries in 2010 are asked to call the parish office so they can be honored at the special celebration hosted by the parish on Sunday, Feb. 14, World Marriage Day.

JACKSON — St. Therese Parish Madonna and St. Monica circle are sponsoring a baby shower for Birthright of Jackson Monday, Feb. 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the parish hall. A presentation will be given about the organization and how people can help.
Those unable to attend but who would like to donate can place their gifts in the boxes in the parish hall. Refreshments will be served.

Chaperones needed
MADISON — St. Francis of Assisi Parish is looking for volunteers to chaperone at the winter youth retreat, “Forever Strong,” set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27, at Camp Garaywa.

Farewell reception
MERIDIAN — St. Patrick and St. Joseph parishioners are invited to a farewell reception for Father Lenin Vargas, associate pastor, Sunday, Feb. 21, after the 11 a.m. Mass in the Family Life Center. Father Vargas has been appointed pastor of Pearl St. Jude Parish.

First reconciliation
OXFORD — St. John Parish is asking parents with children who are not in second grade but who are in need of first reconciliation and First Communion to contact Susan Kelly in order for them to participate in the preparation classes that will take place in February and in April.
The women of the parish are invited to pray the rosary on Monday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. in the student center. An informal discussion will follow.
The parish will hold a blood drive Friday, Feb. 19, from 2 - 7:30 p.m. in the student center. Anyone who donates will receive a free dinner that night at the Lenten fish fry. There is a sign up sheet in the narthex.

Senior social
NATCHEZ — St. Mary Basilica new and improved (formerly In Praise of Age) senior social for the Young at Heart (age 65+) is set for Saturday, Feb. 20. Activities include a luncheon, bingo and prizes.

Mardi Gras party
SHAW — St. Francis of Assisi Parish will host a Mardi Gras party Monday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. in the parish hall. All parishioners and those who helped with the spaghetti supper are invited. Participants will play bingo after the dinner. There will be a sign-up sheet at the back of the church.

Cookie social
SOUTHAVEN — Christ the King Parish monthly cookie social, hosted by Our Lady’s Group (OLG), will be held Sunday, Jan. 31, to coincide with the Rite of Welcome. Anyone wishing to donate snacks should leave them on the table before Mass.
The youth of the parish will host the monthly visit to Golden Living Nursing Home on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1:30 p.m. All parishioners are invited to join the youth as they play bingo and visit the residents.
The required catechist workshop on liturgy will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, from 9 a.m. - noon in the parish hall. Catechists should call Donna Williamson, 662 342-1073, so she can know how many will be attending.

Annual drawdown
VICKSBURG — The Vicksburg School annual $10,000 drawdown is set for Sunday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center. Tickets are available at the development office or online. There is a limited number of tickets. For information visit the website or call 601-630-9762.
The St. Aloysius high school Class of 2010 is offering babysitting for girls and boys in preschool to sixth grade, from 5:30 - 10:30 p.m. in the St. Aloysius cafeteria.
The cost is $30 for the first child and $10 for each additional child in a family. There will be food, movies, a Wii tournament, a mini drawdown, arts, crafts, games and prizes for everyone.
The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, Feb. 9. All proceeds will help pay for the senior retreat/mission. Donations are also accepted. For information call 601-636-2256 or visit them online.
