Why Catholic?
AMORY — St. Helen Parish will begin the final six weeks of the Renew Why Catholic? four-year series the week of Jan. 29. Those who are not part of a small group and would like to be should contact Sister Lael Niblick, lay ecclesial minister.

Tuesday Mass time
BOONEVILLE — St. Francis of Assisi Parish has changed the time of the Mass on all Tuesdays to 11:30 a.m. except the first Tuesday of the month, when it will be at 9 a.m., followed by the opportunity for confessions.
Each Wednesday the parish will have a holy hour from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at which time the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed.

Help with taxes
CAMDEN — Sister Donna Gunn, Sacred Heart Parish special project coordinator, began preparing taxes at the WIN Job Center Tuesday, Jan. 17, from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and will continue each Tuesday until April 17.
Sister Gunn will be at Sacred Heart Parish all other times. To make an appointment for either the parish or the WIN Job Center call 601-331-3300.

Sister Schmitt dies
CAMPBELLSPORT, Wis. — School Sister of St. Francis Corita Schmitt, 88, who served her religious community for more than 60 years, died Jan. 6 at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis.
In the Diocese of Jackson, Sister Schmitt served as a teacher aide at Cadet School, Holly Springs, from 1972-1988.
She served as a homemaker and teacher aide from 1947 until her retirement in 1997, as a volunteer switchboard operator at St. Joseph Convent, Milwaukee, and in the ministry of prayer and presence, at Sacred Heart Convent, Milwaukee and at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 13 at St. Joseph Convent Chapel followed by burial at the sisters’ cemetery.

Father O’Leary’s sister
CANTON — A Mass of Christian Burial for Selena Jones, sister of Father Malcolm O’Leary, was celebrated Monday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at Holy Child Jesus Parish. Burial took place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sulpher Springs. A meal followed at Sacred Heart Parish hall in Canton.

Sister Rockenbaugh dies
CHATAWA — A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister M. Joan of Arc Rockenbaugh, SSND, was celebrated Jan. 18. Sister Rockenbaugh died Jan. 14, at St. Mary of the Pines. Burial took place in the Chatawa Cemetery.
She taught at schools in Louisiana and Texas. She came to St. Mary of the Pines in 2009 where she was an active member of the community until just weeks before her death.
She is survived by a brother, Gerard of Slidell, La.

Free brunch
CLEVELAND — Our Lady of Victory parishioners are invited to a free brunch Sunday, Jan. 22, in the parish center after the 9 a.m. Mass. Religious education children are invited to eat with their parents and then go to classes.
The parish second grade religious education class students will make their first reconciliation Sunday, Jan. 29, starting at 10:30 a.m. during religion classes.
A pizza party will follow. Each child needs to be accompanied by a parent.

GREENVILLE — Confirmation preparation classes at St. Joseph Parish will begin Sunday, Jan. 29, from 4:30 - 5:15 p.m. in the parish hall for all candidates and parents.
On Feb. 5, Super Bowl Sunday, class will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Women’s retreat

Ministers gathering
GREENWOOD — St. Francis of Assisi Parish will hold a joint gathering of all ministers — extraordinary ministers of Communion, lectors and choir members — Thursday, Jan. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. A light social will follow.

Praying for vocations
JACKSON — St. Therese parishioners are encouraged to participate in its praying for vocations ministry by signing up to receive a chalice, a picture of Jesus and/or prayer cards to hold for a week to pray daily for vocations. Sign up sheets are located in the gathering area.

For catechetical leaders
JACKSON — Jeanne Howard, new diocesan director of the Office of Faith Formation, has scheduled three meetings for all catechetical leadership — DRE and CRE for parishes and schools — in Deanerys I, II and IV.
— Holy Family Parish will host the meeting for Deanery I Saturday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. - noon. Refreshments and snacks will be served.
— In Deanery II, the meeting will be held at McComb St. Alphonsus Parish Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. A light lunch will be served.
— Batesville St. Mary Parish will host the meeting for Deanery IV Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. - noon. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

LIFT events
MADISON — St. Francis of Assisi Parish will begin a weekly 10-part series on “Catholicism” Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 6:30 p.m.
The parish will have a blood drive Sunday, Jan. 22.
The women of the parish are invited to participate in the upcoming Ladies in Faith Together (LIFT) events:
— Moms & Tots brunch at Nicole Stuart’s home Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 9:30 a.m.

Financial class
MERIDIAN — St. Joseph Parish will host a Financial Peace University class, Session 1, Monday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. at Kehrer Hall. The class will deal with issues such as how to get out of debt, manage your money effectively, and build wealth

Celebration of marriage
NATCHEZ — St. Mary Parish will honor its parishioners who are celebrating 25, 40, 50 and 60+ years of marriage during the annual celebration of marriage Sunday, Feb. 12, following the 10 a.m. Mass. A luncheon will be served at the Eola Hotel Ballroom.
All married couples in the parish are urged to attend this celebration. Cost is $45 per couple and $25 per individual which includes a buffet lunch, babysitting in St. Therese Hall with pizza for the children, and a chance to win the door prize.
There is no charge for anniversary couples being honored.
Deadline for reservations is Feb. 6.

School open house
SOUTHAVEN — Sacred Heart School will host an Open House during Catholic Schools Week on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 12, from 1 - 3 p.m.
The school will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m. on Feb. 1.

Parents’ meeting
SOUTHAVEN — All parents of children preparing for First Communion in May, including parents of PREP and of Sacred Heart School students, must attend a meeting Saturday, Feb. 11, at 9 a.m. at Christ the King Parish.

Sister Niblick’s instalation
AMORY — Msgr. Elvin Sunds, vicar general, will install Sister Lael Niblick, CSA, as lay ecclesial minister of St. Helen Parish Sunday, Jan. 15. A potluck luncheon will follow after the 10:30 a.m. Mass. All parishioners are invited to attend and to bring a potluck dish to share.
All parishioners are invited to a workshop on “The Eucharist,” presented by Dr. Margaret Nutting Ralph at Tupelo St. James Parish on Saturday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Participants will leave from St. Helen’s parking lot at 8:30 a.m.


Everything helps
BOONEVILLE — St. Francis of Assisi Parish receives money from recycling. Receptacles are in the parish hall for ink and toner cartridges and in the kitchen for all other items — aluminum cans, inkjet cartridges, copier or laser toner bars, cell phones or their batteries (working or not), vegetable, fruit, soup cans and pie tins (clean and without labels).
Parishioners are asked to collect food cans separately from soda cans and pie tins separately from everything else. The parish also collects the pull tabs from aluminum cans for Corinth St. James Parish. |

 

Black history program
CAMDEN — Sacred Heart Parish will sponsor a black history program Sunday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. in the church. Those who would like to participate and share a story, a song, or a poem should contact Jerome Eldridge.
In an effort to teach children about tithing and offering to God the parish has begun to invite the children to bring up their offering before the adults each Sunday.

 

KC spaghetti supper
CLEVELAND — Council 5556 of the Knights of Columbus will hold its annual spaghetti supper Thursday, Feb. 2, from 4 - 7 p.m. at the KC Hall on Highway 8 West. Tickets may be purchased from any KC member or by contacting Michael Aguzzi, 662-402-3377.

Spiritual revival
CLEVELAND — Our Lady of Victories Parish will hold a spiritual revival Sunday-Wednesday, Jan. 22-25, at 6:30 p.m. each night. A nursery will be provided. Those who need transportation should call the parish office, 662-846-6273.

SFO meeting
GREENWOOD — Members of the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO) will meet Sunday, Jan. 22, after the 11 a.m. Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Participants are asked to bring a dish for the potluck lunch. For information call the parish office, 662-453-0623.
Saida and George Rashmawi, Palestinian Catholics originally from Bethlehem, will sell carved olive wood religious articles Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 14-15, after Masses. Proceeds are used to help sustain the Catholic population in the Holy Land.
The parish Mardi Gras ball fund-raiser is set for Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Leflore County Civic Center. Proceeds will benefit St. Francis School.

Pancake breakfast
COLUMBUS — Annunciation School and the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a pancake breakfast Sunday, Jan. 29, from 8:45 - 10 a.m. in the activities center. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children five to 12-year-olds, children under five eat free.

Bingo night
GLUCKSTADT — St. Joseph Parish CYO will sponsor a bingo night Saturday, Jan. 28, from 6 - 8 p.m. in the parish hall. Bingo cards are $5 each; a light meal will be available for a minimal charge. All ages are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the CYO summer youth trip.

Black history program
GREENVILLE — Sacred Heart Parish will host its annual black history program Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. Father Terry Jones will be the guest speaker. The choir and praise dancers from St. Peter Church in Pine Bluff, Ark., will perform.

Theological reflection
HERNANDO — Sister Emily Morgan, RSM, will teach the course “Theological Reflection: Connecting Faith and Life” at Holy Spirit Parish on Mondays, Jan. 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 and 20, from 6:45 - 9 p.m. at the parish.
The course is for those who have completed Catholic Adult Leadership Learnings (CALL) classes, those who are teaching adults Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), classes and those who are teaching high school students. Those interested should sign up now to purchase the book.

King’s birthday

Father Henry’s farewell
JACKSON — On Sunday, Jan. 29, there will be only one Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Therese Parish followed by a farewell reception for Father Bill Henry, pastor.
Celeste Zepponi, a Catholic painter, singer, songwriter, speaker and member of Clarksdale St. Elizabeth Parish, will be the retreat leader of the parish Catholic Women’s Association (CWA) annual spring retreat at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa March 2-4.
CWA organizers are raffling an original angel painting by Zepponi to raise funds to assist women attending the retreat. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5.

`Catholicism’ series
JACKSON — St. Richard Parish Timely Topics and Coffee and Creed groups are presenting Father Robert Barron’s series “Catholicism” at 9:15 a.m. in the Chichester Room during a 12 week-session that will end March 25.
Boy Scout Troop 30 will sell Super Bowl meal tickets before and after all weekend Masses in January. The dinner will be held Feb. 5. Tickets are $7, donated dinners are $6.

Spirituality Series
MADISON — St. Francis of Assisi Parish will continue its “Spirituality Series” Monday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. in the library. The group will study the book “What’s Your Decision? Msgr. Bill Regan dies
WICHITA, Kansas — Msgr. (Charles) Bill Regan, brother of Sister Kate Regan, died peacefully Jan. 4. Msgr. Regan was a priest of the diocese of Wichita, Kan., for over 50 years. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of the Magdalen on Monday, Jan. 9, at 10 a.m.

Parish family breakfast
SOUTHAVEN — Council 7120 of the Knights of Columbus will host its parish family breakfast on the third Sunday of each month (Jan. 15) from 8 - 9:30 a.m. and from 11 a.m. - noon. Proceeds support the Seminarian Education Fund.

Spaghetti dinner
SHELBY — St. Mary’s Parish will host its annual spaghetti dinner Sunday, Jan. 15, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased in advance from church members or at the door. Take-out orders will be available. Music will be provided by Joe Garcia.

Lay ecclesial minister
WEST POINT — Loretta Duquette will be installed as Immaculate Conception Parish lay ecclesial minister Sunday, Jan. 14, at the 5 p.m. Mass.
