Youth convention set Feb. 25-26 in Tupelo

                                                                  Mette

TUPELO — The annual diocesan youth convention this year will be held at St. James Parish Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26.
Michael James Mette will be the keynote presenter. His website, http://michaeljamesmette.com, describes him as “a fresh new face with a bold, energetic style that speaks directly to a “Guitar Hero” generation. Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, he travels the country, inspiring people to better know, love, and serve God.”
Aside from the new venue, several changes have been incorporated in the convention activities, including the change of banners to foam board displays where youth can portray their parish, pastor, adult leaders and the projects and activities they participated in during the past year.
For a kaleidoscope presentation, youth are asked to send copies of photos of their group activities to be displayed on a screen during the convention. Photos can be saved on a disk and sent to the diocesan Office of Youth Ministry. Photos of graduating seniors will be showcased in a “Tribute to Seniors” presentation.
The Spirit of Convention Award will be presented to the group who exhibits the “true” spirit of the convention by being present, being friendly, and living their Catholic faith.
Participanting youth are asked to bring “give-away” souvenirs or mementos — floral beads or river rocks with the name of their parish written on them, stickers, wrist bracelets — for friendship swaps with their new friends,
Each parish should be prepared to sing, dance, play the drums, mime, or juggle for a three to five minutes presentation.
Deadline to summit photos is Tuesday, Jan. 24, and to register is Monday, Feb. 6.
Instead of selling ads, this year youth are asked to solicit patrons. The money donated will apply toward their registration fee. In the past, the youth sold ads which were published in the convention book. A convention book will not be printed in the future.
