`I have finally come back home’

Born a “cradle Catholic” in a northern state, I feel I took my religion for granted.          Most of my friends were Catholic and I remember feeling somewhat superior to the few people I knew who were of some other faith.
Later in my life, circumstances prevented me from receiving Holy Communion.          Although I tried to stay true to my faith, I found myself experimenting with different religions.
I felt I was no longer a Catholic because I could not share in the most important part of the Mass. When I did attend church, I would leave when Communion began; for me, Mass was over with. I would often think, “Why do I even bother?”
At this low point in my life, the good Lord intervened. A very kind and loving priest was assigned to our parish, and I was able to work up the courage to explain my situation to him. He was able to help me through a special dispensation and I even attended RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) classes.
After 30 years of not receiving the Eucharist, I found myself walking up to the altar to do just that! I remember crying as I walked back to my pew, and the thought going through my mind: “I have finally come back home!”
Needless to say, I no longer take my faith for granted and I still have that feeling of “coming home” every time I receive the Lord in Holy Communion.
