Parishes sponsor pro-life events across diocese
JACKSON — In coordination with the efforts of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Pro-Life Secretariat, the Catholic Charities Inc. Committee on Pro-Life Activities promotes pro-life activities across the Diocese of Jackson. Recently, the committee sent packets of pro-life materials including a questionnaire of activities to each of the 101 parishes in the 65 counties of the diocese.
Parishes were asked to return these questionnaires with information about certain pro-life activities engaged during the year. Among those activities were Masses for Life, Life Rosaries, Life Chain, Crisis Pregnancy Referrals, Pro-Life Prayer Intentions, Death Penalty Prayer Vigils, and Pro-Life Prayer Vigils.
While many parishes are hosting pro-life events and activities, two are truly leading the way in helping to establish a culture of life. Queen of Peace Parish in Olive Branch celebrates life with a Mass for Life the first Saturday of each month. Their commitment to life can be heard every day in prayer intentions during Mass and seen during January, May, and October when they pray Life Rosaries and display pro-life signs in front of the church and in April where they pray and display signs in front of Planned Parenthood of Memphis.
Each January and October Queen of Peace participates in a Life Chain, and last August the parish hosted a pro-life day retreat with confessions and pro-life speakers.
They have participated in gathering donations for pro-life organizations such as Birthright of Memphis, where many of the parish women volunteer, and the Knights of Columbus and Men’s Club were responsible for delivering an ultrasound machine to the Care Center in Southaven.
Sacred Heart Parish in Canton also leads the way in activities with their monthly Masses for Life and Life Rosaries twice a year.
They participate in life chains when they are offered in the area and help women in need with phone referrals to crisis pregnancy centers and distributed information.
Life has become an integral part of their liturgy with prayer intentions offered weekly and bi-weekly and participation in prayer vigils and prayer intentions leading to and during executions.
The work of parishes like Queen of Peace in Olive Branch and Sacred Heart in Canton brings the message of life to many during the years.
