Eupora mission closes next month,
final Mass planned Feb. 19
JACKSON — On Dec. 18, 2011, Bishop Joseph Latino announced St. John Neumann Mission in Eupora would close. Bishop Latino will celebrate a final Mass on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at the mission church.
A letter with the Bishop’s decision was read to St. John Neumann parishioners at Mass on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011.
“After prayerful consideration, it is with deep regret that I have come to the conclusion that it is best to close St. John Neumann Mission. I sincerely believe the individuals and families who are members of the mission would be better served by becoming active members of neighboring Catholic parishes,” the bishop wrote.
St. John Neumann is staffed and attended by Glenmary Home Missioners and Priests, who will be leaving the Diocese of Jackson by 2013. The decision to close St. John Neumann came after a yearlong process including meetings with parishioners, Glenmary Home Missioners representatives and Msgr. Elvin Sunds, vicar general for the Diocese of Jackson. This is part of an overall process involving all parishes and missions attended by Glenmary priests.
“It is with a heavy heart that I convey this message,” said Bishop Latino in his letter. “I join with you in mourning the loss of St. John Neumann. But I also know that neighboring Catholic parishes will welcome you with joy and open arms,” he added.
In his letter, Bishop Latino stated no one wants to close a church, especially a bishop, but the challenges faced by the small numbers supporting the mission coupled with the availability of the sacraments and active Catholic community life in parishes nearby made the difficult decision somewhat less traumatic.
“I will be with you Sunday, Feb. 19, to celebrate a final Mass. I hope we can share memories, give thanks for all those who have been a part of St. John Neumann and look forward with hope and joy to a bright and better future,” Bishop Latino concluded in the letter.
