Examination of Conscience for Advent
(As we prayerfully read this outline, we will recognize ways in which we have
sinned and certain aspects of our lives that need changing.)
• Have I thought only of my own needs and not considered the needs of others?
• Did I use bad language? 
• Did I show disrespect for God’s holy name by using it carelessly and irreverently?
• Did I give time to prayer this week, this month? Have I prayed today? Have I neglected to thank God for the blessings of my life?
• Have I been disrespectful toward (a) public officials, (b) teachers, (c) neighbors, (d) grandparents, (e) friends, (t) aunts/uncles (g) ministers, (h) children? Have I said “thanks” to those who have helped me?
• Did I lose my temper with my family, co·workers, or employees?
• Have I caused others to be upset?
• Have I cared for my family members, regarding them as a precious gift of God?
• Am I a forgiving and accepting person? Do I hold people’s past against them? Do I look down on those who have been injail?
• Have I bullied others by what I said, by what I did, or by pretending to know more than them?
• Do I look on money as being so important that I would do anything to get it? Am I selfish on how I use my money?
• Have I thrown litter on the streets, public parks, recreation areas or in my home?
• Have I used rude words or slogans in my conversations?
• Havel been lazy regarding community work, church work, housework, or my job?
• Have I neglected to develop my talent, or fail to use it for community and church work?
• Do I share my time, talent. and money with people in need or with my church?
• Have I put my health in danger by (a) not eating the right kinds of foods, (b) smoking, (c) taking illegal drugs. (d) taking medicine without a doctor’s advice, (e) by not getting enough rest, (f) taking or abusing alcohol, (g) not getting enough exercise?
• Have I endangered my own life and/or the life of others by the way I drive, by carelessness with guns?
• Have I used the opportunities I get to help others, to help the church, or to help the school?
• Have I looked at magazines, pictures, or movies that were pornographic, violent, or disrespectful of the dignity of others?
• Do I spend too much time watching television, videos, playing video games, or on the Internet?
• Have I been unfaithful to my marriage vows by my words, thoughts, actions?
• Have I dressed or acted immodestly in order to get noticed?
• Have I been dishonest in my dealings with others? Have I spent my money selfishly and not paid my debts? Have I taken things that did not belong to me? Have I broken or damaged something that did not belong to me? Have I been jealous of others or of the things they have and/or acted spitefully because of this?
• Have I said something mean about somebody?
• Have I told a secret that damaged a person’s good name? Have I told lies or exaggerated about somebody? Have I used disrespectful language when talking to or about somebody? Have I tried to get even with somebody?
• Have I missed Mass on a Sunday or a holy day through my carelessness or have I been inattentive at Mass by coming in late or leaving early?
• Do I use other people to take advantage of them?
• Have I used the gift of my sexuality immorally and/or have I exploited the sexuality of others?
• What other sins have I committed?
• What one aspect of my life do I want to improve?
• When did I last confess my sins and get forgiveness?
