‘Be a giver’ promotes gifts for children
JACKSON — Christmas will be here in about two months and we need people to “BE A GIVER,” said Miriam Koury, who works in the Development Department of Catholic Charities.
“And what do we mean by that? We are asking everyone to consider adopting a Catholic Charities family for Christmas,” she said.
“Each year many of our young clients would have no Christmas without the generosity of our donors. So we are asking every small faith group or Bible study group or Sunday School class to adopt a family. We are asking for participation from all our parishes, missions, high schools, elementary schools, social clubs, sororities, fraternities, and churches of other faiths,” she said.
Catholic Charities Hope Haven Home-Based Program provides services for emotionally disturbed children and the Therapeutic Foster Care Program (TFC) serves children in the Department of Human Services’ custody who have experienced traumatic events in their lives.
Koury said, the entire family is always affected in these situations and all family members learn coping mechanisms provided by these programs.
“Last year one of our children requested a bicycle for Christmas,” Koury said. “Our generous donor felt the other children might feel slighted ... so she bought six bicycles. What a joyous Christmas that family experienced. When we shared the excitement of the children over the bicycles, the donor’s happiness and satisfaction was clearly seen.”
“Please be a sign of Christ’s love to a family in need this upcoming Christmas season,” Koury said. Contact Mallie Simmons for Hope Haven Home-Based at 601-326-3732 or Rena Tanner for TFC at 601-326-3733 by Monday, Nov. 15. “Remember ‘To give is better than to receive.’”
