St. Dominic offers screening
JACKSON — Does someone you know suffer from upper- and lower-extremity paralysis caused by central nervous system injuries or disease? If so, St. Dominic’s Outpatient Rehab Center may have the solution. St. Dominic’s is one of the first hospitals in the state to offer NESS L300 and NESS H200.
The NESS L300 is a device that improves walking ability and overall quality of life in people experiencing foot drop, a common result of: stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, brain tumors, incomplete spinal-cord injuries, and other disorders of the central nervous system.
Treatment with the NESS L300 in combination with physical therapy can improve or restore the patient’s gait, resulting in greater speed, balance, stride and a more normal gait pattern.
St. Dominic’s trained outpatient physical therapists evaluate people with foot drop due to recent and prior neurological disease and injury to determine if they are appropriate candidates to try the device.
Wendy Barrilleaux, clinical coordinator of St. Dominic’s Outpatient Rehab, said the Ness L300 is not designed for all patients with foot drop. Only patients whose foot drop was caused by disease or injury to the brain or spinal cord and who can walk relatively well with the help of a cane or walker are ideal candidates for the device.
In addition, the NESS H200 Hand Rehabilitation System has been shown to facilitate the return of hand function in patients at an acute phase of recovery following stroke and brain injury, and in select patients whose injuries are years old.
St. Dominic’s is hosting a free screening day for both the NESS L300 and NESS H200 on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. – noon in the Outpatient Rehab Center in Dominican Plaza, directly across from St. Dominic Hospital. Call 601-200-4920 to make an appointment.
