Mississippi dioceses sponsor
Education Car Tag project
JACKSON — The diocesan Office of Catholic Schools in conjunction with the Department of Education in the Diocese of Biloxi is sponsoring a Catholic Education Car Tag Project throughout the state.
All supporters of Catholic education in Mississippi are being encouraged to participate in this statewide project by completing an “Application for a Special Tag.” Sister Deborah Hughes, superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Jackson, said 300 tags must be presold before the Mississippi State Tax Commission will begin production of the especially designed car tag: Celebrate Catholic Education.
The State Tax Commission will return $24 to the diocese from the purchase price of $31 from each tag, Sister Hughes said.
“The chief recipient of the proceeds of the sale of car tags in the Diocese of Jackson will be the Bishop William Houck Catholic Education Endowment which supports professional development for our Catholic school principals and teachers,” Sister Hughes said.
Sales of car tags made through a specific Catholic school will benefit ($10 per tag) that particular school.
A separate application must be completed for each vehicle. Checks need to be made payable to the Mississippi State Tax Commission. Applicants will be notified when the car tags are available for pick-up at the Office of the Tax Collector in the applicant’s particular county of residence. At that time individuals can pick up their car tag and turn in their old tag.
Sister Hughes said people don’t need to wait until the renewal of their present car tag. “Purchase your specialty tag now,” she said. “Please support Catholic education in Mississippi as our system of Catholic schools begins their 164th year of service here to students and families of the Diocese of Jackson.”
