St. Richard School receives MAC grants
JACKSON — St. Richard School was recently awarded a $4,750 project grant and a $1,725 Model School grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). These grants are a portion of the $1.64 million in grants the commission will award in 2010-2011. St. Richard will use the grants to continue the Whole Schools Initiative at the school thus expanding the classroom instruction by infusing arts across the curriculum.
Jules Michel, school principal, said these grants will provide for professional development, which enables teachers to more effectively use the arts every day to engage all students in a variety of subjects.
“The grants will allow students to receive enriching pure arts experiences through the school’s regular curriculum of music, visual and performing arts,” he said.
“We are creating an environment where art is more than just mere decoration or enrichment, but rather a primary context in which information is learned and shared.”
For the past three years, St. Richard School has been recognized as a “Model School” in the state by MAC for its outstanding work in integrating the arts into the academic curriculum as well as providing opportunities for a variety of art experiences for students, teachers, parents, and the community.
The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Malcolm White, executive director of MAC, said the grants awarded by the commission provide funding for the staging of festivals, theatre performances and many other arts-related activities.
