Men’s conference set for Aug. 20-21
By Freddie Britt
CLARKSDALE — The seventh annual Catholic men’s conference will be held at St. Elizabeth Parish Friday and Saturday, August 20-21, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday and ending with Mass on Saturday at 5 p.m.
This year’s theme is “Men of God —Called to Righteousness.”
This year’s speakers include Father Donald Calloway — a convert to Catholicism and a member of the Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception. Before his conversion to Catholicism, he was a high- school dropout who had been kicked out of a foreign country, institutionalized twice, and thrown into jail multiple times. He is a well-known conference speaker on Divine Mercy and the Blessed Virgin Mary. He speaks passionately about these topics in his moving conversion story. Currently Father Calloway is the House Superior of the Marian House of Studies in Steubenville, Ohio.
Brother Chris Alar entered the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception as a postulant in July 2006. After working several years at a Fortune 500 Tier 1 automotive supplier, he began his own consulting company in Charlotte, N.C., in 2000.
During that time he learned about the message and devotion of Divine Mercy on EWTN, which changed his life. Realizing he had a call to the priesthood, he made the very difficult decision to sell his business, sell his home, sell all his belongings, and break-off his engagement with a woman all in order to follow the Lord’s calling.
As part of his formation, he attended Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, for his philosophy studies and then entered Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., for his theological studies. He is currently doing an apostolic year at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass., where he will be attending Holy Apostles Seminary in the fall.
Bruce Brewer and Joe Polito, along with members of the Jubilee music ministry, will be leading the praise and worship music. They minister regularly at Catholic conferences and retreats.
The cost for the conference is $65 which includes breakfast and lunch on Saturday. For information call Freddie or Valerie Britt at 662-627-1823.
