Spring Hill announces new formats, class schedules for theology, ministry
MOBILE — The Spring Hill College theology department has announced new formats and class schedules for its graduate programs in theology and ministry.
Beginning in fall 2010, courses will be offered in a hybrid or blended format that includes both online assignments and in-class meetings. The new formats integrate distance-learning technologies with on-site classroom instruction and personal interaction.
The courses are designed to provide greater flexibility for students to be able to continue their daily routines and have the opportunity to continue their studies and personal spiritual enrichment, according to Alice Hughes, director of the Spring Hill Master’s Program for the Diocese of Jackson.
The inaugural course this fall Pauline Letters & Theology, will be taught by Dr. Timothy Carmody, professor of theology. Students from Mobile, Birmingham, Ala., and Jackson, Miss., are eligible to register for the course.
Carmody will travel to each site for two class meetings, rather than the six Saturdays of a traditional schedule. The remainder of the course will be offered online.
The in-class meetings will provide a chance for the professor to meet with students individually about their own research and papers, and for classroom discussion of the material. It will provide an opportunity for the professor to develop and explain points in the on-line material that are of interest to the students.
In Jackson the two class meetings are Sept. 26 and Nov. 6.
Fully online courses will debut during the winter term, but most courses will follow either the new blended format or the traditional six Saturdays, in order to build a strong community of learning among students and faculty, Hughes said.
