Father Denis Harlow dies in Gulfport
GULFPORT — Father Denis Harlow, 76, a retired priest of the Diocese of Biloxi who, for many years, resided at Sacred Heart Parish in D’Iberville, died on July 1 in Gulfport.
Father Harlow was born Sept. 7, 1933 in Market Square, Roscommon, Ireland.
He was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1958 and arrived in the Diocese of Natchez-Jackson in September of that same year. When the Diocese of Biloxi was established in 1977, he became a priest for the Biloxi diocese.
His first assignment was as assistant pastor at St. Paul Parish in Vicksburg. He also served as assistant pastor at St. Mary Parish, Jackson; Our Lady of the Gulf Parish, Bay St. Louis; St. Mary Parish, Natchez; and Sacred Heart Parish, D’Iberville.
Father Harlow served as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Wiggins; St. John Parish, Crystal Springs; Sacred Heart Parish, Canton; St. Joseph Parish, Orange Grove and St. Mary Parish, Woolmarket.
In addition, he served as Newman Chaplain at Copiah Lincoln Junior College, Wesson.
Father Harlow also served as chaplain to Biloxi Regional Medical Center and to Gulf Coast Community Hospital, Biloxi, and as part-time chaplain at the VA Medical Center, Biloxi. In retirement, he also celebrated Masses at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Since Hurricane Katrina destroyed the rectory at Sacred Heart in D’Iberville, Father Harlow, whose health was failing, resided with local physican, Dr. Eva Magiros, before being welcomed to the Sisters of Mercy’s convent in Biloxi. Last January, he moved into one of the retired priests residences at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Biloxi, which he shared with Father Patrick McDermott.
Father Harlow is preceded in death by his parents, Denis Joseph and Mary Harlow; and a brother, Thomas Harlow. He is survived by four sisters, Myra Hogan, Maria Sarto, Eilish Smyth of Roscommon, all of Ireland; and three brothers, Padraig Harlow and James Harlow, both of Roscommon, Ireland; and William Harlow of Schenectady, N.Y., and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 6, at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Burial followed in Biloxi City Cemetery.
