Spring Hills sets schedule for summer institute
MOBILE, Ala. – Spring Hill College’s Department of Theology and Ministry announced the schedules for this year’s Summer Institute of Christian Spirituality. Dates are Session I: May 30-June 5 and Session II: June 6-12.
A silent, 5- or 8-day directed retreat will precede the sessions. The institute is designed for adults interested in both academic challenge and spiritual enrichment.
The institute, now in its 17th year, is held on the Spring Hill campus and will feature eight courses over the two-week period. Course titles include: “The Spirituality of Peacemaking,” “Christ and Krishna: An Experience of Comparative Theology,” “Prayer and Discernment,” “Mysticism for Today: Spiritual Teachings of Early French Jesuits,” and “Christ and Interreligious Friendship.”
Additionally, Dr. Katherine Aber-nathy, associate professor of English at the University of Mobile, will offer a course that deals with human suffering titled “The Tears of Humanity and the Heart of God: A Look at Five Faith Perspectives on Human Suffering.”
Dr. Timothy Carmody, professor of theology at Spring Hill and author of the newly published book from Paulist Press, “The Gospel of Mark: Question by Question,” will teach a course that will examine an important theme and activity in Luke-Acts, where prayer and the use of the word “prayer” occurs more frequently than in any of the other Gospels.
Also this year’s Summer Colloquium on “Spirituality, Thomas Merton and Interreligious Dialogue,” will be presented by a visiting team of Merton scholars, including Dr. Sidney Griffith, Dr. Victor Kramer, and Dr. David King.
The colloquium offers a taste of contemporary scholarship applied to Christian faith in daily life. Ideal for continuing education or personal enrichment, the Colloquium is non-credit and requires no readings, papers or tests.
This year, a new opportunity is being offered to clergy, religious and lay ministers for professional development or personal enrichment. They may participate in the Summer Institute courses for a specially reduced fee as part of the Summer Easy Listening program. Visit the website and click on registration page.
