Events in Canton remember Sister Thea
CANTON — A joyous art and musical celebration of the life and spirituality of Sister Thea Bowman, FSPA, featuring Brother Michael O’Neill McGrath, author and illustrator of “This Little Light: Lessons in Living from Sister Thea Bowman,” will be presented Sunday, March 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Parish Center, 238 East Center Street.
The program which is open to the public will also feature Brother McGrath’s paintings. Choirs from Holy Child Jesus and Sacred Heart parishes from Canton and Sacred Heart Parish from Camden will perform.
Brother McGrath will also give a presentation for local Catholics entitled “Journey with the Saints of Lent” on Saturday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m. at Holy Child Jesus Church, 315 Garrett Street.
“Lent is the perfect season to take a good look at our priorities and needs,” local organizers said. “Helped by Brother McGrath’s paintings and stories, the saints and gospel stories of Lent will come alive, leading us to a deeper awareness of God’s presence as we journey together towards Jerusalem.
“Join us to make the Stations of the Cross as you’ve never done before,” they said.
Brother McGrath will be on hand to sign books and artwork made available for purchase after each presentation.

Sister Bowman, a native of Yazoo City, converted to Catholicism as a child. She became a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration.
The book jacket of “Thea Bowman: In My Own Words” published last year, describes her work. “As a black religious sister in a predominantly white world, Sister Bowman was able to cross cultural boundaries and share her cultural and spiritual gifts while learning about and lifting up the cultural gifts of others.”
She died on March 30, 1990 after a long bout with breast cancer.
A Mass to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sister Bowman’s death will be celebrated at her grave in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis at noon on Tuesday, March 30, by Father Maurice Nutt, CSsR. He is pastor of Holy Names Catholic Church in Memphis and a former student of Sister Bowman.
“Everyone is invited to this Mass,” according to Sister Charlene Smith, FSPA, a friend of Sister Bowman and fellow member of the Franciscan sisters.
