Notre Dame opens season in Itta Bena
GREENVILLE – Opening day for the 2010 University of Notre Dame baseball season will be Feb. 19 at Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena. The Fighting Irish will take on the Delta Devils at 1 p.m. at Shanks Field on the Valley campus, located on Highway 82 West about 10 miles west of Greenwood.
The Fighting Irish will arrive in Greenville on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and a brief welcome event will be staged at the Hampton Inn.
Paul Artman, principal of St. Joseph School, said St. Joseph School, also known as the Fighting Irish, is hosting the Notre Dame team while they are in town.
Team members will address an assembly of St. Joseph students on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and be available for autographs before they work out at Legion Field later in the afternoon. The Phil Mansour family and friends will host a private dinner for the Notre Dame team Thursday evening.
Friday afternoon, the Fighting Irish kick off their season against the Delta Devils at 1 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
On Saturday the teams will play at Legion Field in Greenville at 1 p.m. The St. Joseph Athletic Association will be selling concessions at the games in Greenville. Admission is $10 for both games on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday at 6:30 p.m., St. Joseph School will host both Notre Dame and Mississippi Valley State for a spaghetti dinner provided by the Knights of Columbus in the Richard Somers Cafetorium.
The Notre Dame team will attend Sunday Mass at 8 a.m. at St. Joseph Church.
The team will conclude its delta tour on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Mississippi Valley State.
There will be a private dinner for the Notre Dame team at Doe’s Eat Place following Sunday’s game. The team will then travel to Clearwater, Fla., for the Big East / Big Ten Challenge beginning Feb. 26.
