Host of activities celebrate feast of Guadalupe

JACKSON — Hispanic Catholics in the Diocese of Jackson will mark the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with prayer, songs and fellowship on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12-13.
Catholics whether they are Hispanics or not celebrate this feast with novenas, mañanitas (a sunrise service), walking/car processions, Masses, skits, and fiestas. Preparation sometimes includes praying a novena of rosaries at different homes leading up to the feast day.
Celebrations are being hosted by the following parishes/missions:
Booneville St. Francis of Assisi
There will have a special service with songs, prayers, and a skit by religious education students at the 4 p.m. Mass Saturday, Dec. 12.
Carthage St. Anne
A celebration on Saturday, Dec. 12, during the 6 p.m. Mass will include a children’s procession with flowers, scripture readings, music, reflection on Our Lady of Guadalupe and refreshments.
Corinth St. James
The last novena rosary will be prayed at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in the church followed by light refreshments of chocolate and bread in the cafeteria.
At 10:25 p.m. there will be a skit about the aparition of the Virgen to Juan Diego followed by personal testimonies about the virgin. At 11:30 p.m. the Hispanic choir “Christ the King” will sing and will continue with mañanitas. On Sunday, Dec. 13, participants will gather for a procession around the church grounds at 11:30 p.m. Mass and dinner will follow.
Eupora St. John
Hispanic parishioners are praying a novena and rosary at 6 p.m. in different homes until Saturday, Dec. 12. Mass will be celebrated after the novena followed by a small reception.
Forest St. Michael
Mass will be celebrated at 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, followed by refreshments. On Saturday, Dec. 12, a procession will leave from the county court house and head to St. Michael Church. Mass will be celebrated outdoors at noon followed by a festival of food, dances, and games. The celebration will end with the movie, “Guadalupe” at 4 p.m.
Houston Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Hispanic Community is praying a novena until Saturday, Dec. 12. The novena will end with mañanitas at 5 a.m. followed by a breakfast of coffee and bread. Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. followed by a dinner.
Morton St. Martin Center
On Friday, Dec. 11, Mass will be celebrated at 9 p.m. followed by refreshments and mañanitas. On Saturday, Dec. 12, the community will join Forest St. Michael parishioners for a procession and other celebrations.
New Albany St. Francis of Assisi
The rosaries to the Virgin of Guadalupe that began on Sept. 4 will end Friday, Dec. 11. From Dec. 3-11, the rosaries will be bilingual. The celebration on Saturday, Dec. 12, will include mañanitas at 5:30 a.m. accompanied by a musical band from Ripley St. Mathews Mission and the church’s choir, continuing with light refreshments and Mass at 7 a.m.
At noon there will be baptisms and at 2 p.m. there will be a wedding. At 4:30 p.m. a procession of cars will leave from the city museum and head to St. Francis of Assisi Church. A bilingual Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m. with a women’s mariachi from Memphis followed by dinner and music.
Natchez Assumption
A procession will leave from St. Mary Basilica at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, and head to Assumption Church for Mass at 6 p.m. A dinner will follow.
Jackson St. Mary
Activities will include a rosary, mañanitas followed by refreshments Friday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Dec. 12, Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Food, music, and dance will follow in the gym.
Jackson St. Peter
Members of the Hispanic Community will gather outside Pearl St. Jude Church at 9 a.m. for a dancing presentation by a group from Houston, Texas. A play about the apparition of the Virgin to Juan Diego will follow.
At 11 a.m. a motorcade will leave from St. Jude Church and head to the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle. Hispanics will walk/run carrying a torch following a decorated truck carrying the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
From 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. there will be a dance presentation in Smith Park. A rosary and procession around the park will follow. Mass will celebrated at 2 p.m. A reception will be held at St. Therese Parish.
Meridian St. Joseph
On Sunday, Dec. 13, the celebration will beginning with a motorcade leaving St. Joseph parking lot at 2:30 p.m. headed for St. Patrick Church where Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Dinner, music and fellowship will follow in the Family Life Center. Parishioners are asked to bring a dish to share with the community according to the first letter of their last name; A-F, an appetizer; G-L, main dish; M-R, side/salad; and S-Z, dessert.
Olive Branch Queen of Peace
The celebration on Saturday, Dec. 12, will begin with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. followed by a bilingual Mass and a potluck dinner.
Tupelo St. James
The local community is praying a novena of rosaries at 6:30 p.m. each evening until Friday, Dec. 11. On that evening, the rosary will be prayed at 10 p.m. in the new building. Also on Dec. 11, there will be a presentation by a Guadalupan dance group at 9 p.m. At 11 p.m. there will be a skit about the apparition of the Virgin to Juan Diego followed by mañanitas accompanied by the Mariachi Rio Verde. A breakfast will be served at 1 a.m. highlighted by the mariachi and dances.
On Saturday, Dec. 12, at noon a procession will leave from the MDOT parking lot and head to St. James Parish. Mass will follow at 1 p.m. and a party at 3 p.m. with entertainment provided by “Tamborazo Zacatecano” and “Banda Amanecer Latino.”
Vicksburg St. Michael
The celebration on Sunday, Dec 13, will begin with a rosary at 1 p.m. followed by Mass at 2 p.m. and a gathering in the parish hall.
