Redefining retirement, caregiving
topics of upcoming seminar
JACKSON — The deadline for registration for the Johnson Institute Seminar for Senior Ministry is Wednesday, Oct. 28. St. Peter Parish’s senior adult ministry program is sponsoring the seminar Monday-Friday, Nov. 9-13, at St. Dominic Hospital.
Laura Tarbutton, senior adult minister at St. Peter Parish, said as parish congregations mature, the need for programs geared toward senior adults and their spirituality increases.
“To help meet those needs, we are sponsoring the seminar which will be presented by Dr. Richard Johnson, nationally recognized for his pioneering work in Maturing Adult Faith Formation and Spiritual Gerontology,” she said.
Two classes will be offered and are open to anyone. The classes will benefit laity, as well as consecrated and ordained ministers in helping their parish to “age,” according to organizers.
The first class, “Redefining Retirement as a Spiritual Journey: Finding New Purpose, New Meaning, and New Directions in the Retirement Transition,” is scheduled from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 9 a.m. - noon on Wednesday.
The second class, “The Dynamics of Caregiving: Caregivers are People Too,” is scheduled from 1:30 - 5 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. - noon Friday.
The courses are $125 each, or both for $250. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $50. Costs will cover tuition, books and handouts. Participants will pay for their own lunch.
Tarbutton said because of a generous parishioner, St. Peter’s Senior Adult Ministry will absorb the cost for two people from each parish in Deanery I, that could include the pastor, associate pastor, pastoral minister or parishioner of the pastor’s choosing.
The Johnson Institute offers a professional certificate program addressing issues such as: “A New Vision of Senior Adult Ministry,” “The 12 Keys to Spiritual Vitality,” and “How to Successfully Minister With the Five Difficult Personalities of the Later Years.”
“The programs offered by the institute view aging as a spiritual adventure rather than as a slippage into a diminished status,” Tarbutton said.
