St. Richard School receives grant
from Mississippi Arts Commission
JACKSON — St. Richard School has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) to continue the Whole Schools Initiative expanding the classroom instruction by infusing arts across the school curriculum.
Tessy Sanli, public relations coordinator at St. Richard School, said this grant will bring artists and educators together for collaboration on an integrated curriculum; provide for professional development; and allow students to receive “enriching pure arts experiences” through the school’s regular curriculum of music, visual and performing arts.
“The arts make it possible for all St. Richard students to learn more effectively, retain what they have learned and know how to apply what they have learned in a variety of contexts,” Sanli said.
Sanli said for this reason, St. Richard School is dedicated to better teaching each student through the arts. “We are creating an environment where art is more than just mere decoration or enrichment, but rather a primary context in which information is learned and shared.”
In 2008 and 2009, the school was recognized as a “Model School” in Mississippi by the MAC for its work in integrating the arts into its academic curriculum.
The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
