Sisters of Charity commemorate bicentennial
EMMITSBURG, Md. — The Sisters and Daughters of Charity will celebrate their bicentennial July 31-Aug. 2 on the grounds where it all began 200 years ago. Several celebrations will be held throughout the country during the year honoring this anniversary.
The congregation is inviting all the churches in the United States to ring their church bells at one minute to noon EDT on Sunday, Aug. 2, as a sign of God’s blessing on the country, the church and as a sign of God’s blessing on the life and works of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first United States born saint, and the foundress of the Sisters of Charity.
Sister Vincentia Goeb, chair of the bicentennial committee, said this event is an honor for the Catholic Church in America and to all the Sisters/Daughters of Charity throughout the world.
