School Sisters of St. Francis celebrate jubilees June 20
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – On June 20, 66 U.S. School Sisters of St. Francis (SSSF) will celebrate milestone anniversaries of service as women religious. Three associates of the School Sisters of St. Francis will also celebrate 25 year Jubilees.
The following sisters served in the Diocese of Jackson:
50 YEARS Sister Liana Mich celebrates 50 years as a religious. In 1973, she transferred into the School Sisters of St. Francis from the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Milwaukee. She was born in Milwaukee and has a bachelor’s degree from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee (1965) and master degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1972) and Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri (1997).
Sister Mich has lived her religious ministry in education and pastoral roles. In the Diocese of Jackson, she served as principal of Holy Family School in Jackson (1978-1986). She resides in Oklahoma City.
70 YEARS Sister Arlene Welding celebrates 70 years as a School Sister of St. Francis. She was born in Oakdale, Neb. She has a bachelor’s degree from Alverno College in Milwaukee (1943) and a master’s degree from the University of San Francisco (1975). Sister Welding lived Her religious ministry was in education, campus ministry and social concerns. In the Diocese of Jackson, she taught at St. Francis School in Yazoo City (1953-1962). She resides in Campbellsport, Wis.
75 YEARS Sister Mary Blanche Mara (Egbert) celebrates 75 years as a School Sister of St. Francis. She was born in Wauzeka, Wis. Sister Mara has lived her religious ministry as a homemaker, teacher aide and librarian.
In the Diocese of Jackson, she served as teacher aide and office assistant at Sacred Heart School in Walls (1982-1991). She resides in Campbellsport.
The School Sisters of St. Francis are an international congregation of more than 1,050 sisters serving in the United States, Europe, Latin America and India.
In the United States, over 620 sisters strive to make a difference in the lives of the poor, especially women and children, through ministries in education, health care, social and pastoral work, fine arts, and prayer and presence.
