Classes address senior ministry
JACKSON — As parish congregations mature, the need for programs geared toward senior adults and their spirituality increases, according to Laura Tarbutton, senior adult minister at St. Peter Parish.
To help meet those needs, St. Peter’s senior adult ministry program is sponsoring the Johnson Institute Seminar for Senior Ministry from Monday to Friday, Nov. 9 - 13, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Richard Johnson is nationally recognized for his pioneering work in Maturing Adult Faith Formation and Spiritual Gerontology.
Two classes will be offered and are open to anyone. The classes will benefit laity, consecrated and ordained ministers in helping their parish to “age,” according to organizers.
The first class, “Redefining Retirement as a Spiritual Journey: Finding New Purpose, New Meaning, and New Directions in the Retirement Transition,” is scheduled from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 9 a.m. - noon on Wednesday.
The second class, “The Dynamics of Caregiving: Caregivers are People Too,” is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. - noon Friday.
The courses are $125 each, or both for $250. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $50.
Costs will cover tuition, books and handouts. Participants will pay for their own lunch.
Currently there is no deadline set for registration.
Dr. Johnson offers a professional certificate program addressing issues such as: “A New Vision of Senior Adult Ministry,” “The 12 Keys to Spiritual Vitality,” and “How to Successfully Minister With the Five Difficult Personalities of the Later Years.”
