Jackson Sister Thea Bowman students
publish their stories
JACKSON — During the 2008-9 school year Lindsay Johns led her third-grade students in the process of becoming the Third Grade Publishing Company, a method of teaching writing and applying English lessons as turn their work into a finished published product.
“Every student brainstorms, drafts, edits and publishes at their own pace,” she said. “We would publish stories with lined paper out of construction paper, but the students were ready to publish a hard cover book. We first completed a recipe book as a whole class. Then each student chose their favorite individual story to publish through Student Treasures, a real publishing company.” She said it took a month to complete the whole process from brainstorming to illustrating and publishing.
“When the final products finally arrived we were thrilled! To conclude the year and celebrate our hard work we had an Open House Book Signing for the community to come and read our books.
“We were so happy with all of the visitors who were able to come and the students truly enjoyed showing off their books,” said Johns.
