Retreatants `discover God in ordinary’

JACKSON — Sister Marenid Fabre, a representative of Renew International, told a group of Hispanic adults Thursday, March 19, if they want to be happy they must focus on being positive. “If it’s hard for you to center on that thought then write it down on a piece of paper and paste it on your mirror,” she said.
“Remember, God wants you to be happy,” she added.
Sister Fabre led the “Discover God in the Ordinary” retreat for the Hispanic community of the Diocese of Jackson as part of the Why Catholic? program.
According to Sister Fabre, this part of the program is called a “retreat” because it is a way of getting away from the daily routine to come together to grow in faith.
About 25 Hispanics from the Jackson area gathered at St. Peter Parish center for this retreat which included reflection, prayer, and music.
To reflect on how one discovers God in creation, in ourselves and in the ordinary, participants selected photos portraying things in nature and shared their feelings describing how they identify with that part of nature. They also made clay pots reflecting on how God made them.
One of the participants said he didn’t make his clay pot pretty or perfect because he felt beauty is a personal feeling and people are imperfect. Another said while working with the clay he thought about how God made us.
The retreat ended with a presentation on well-known saints popular in the Hispanic culture.
