Mexican Consulate visits Natchez
NATCHEZ — The Mexican Consulate from New Orleans held an all day clinic for Mexican nationals recently at Assumption Parish. Father David O’Connor, pastor, estimated about 150-175 people attended the service which was staffed by eight members of the consulate.
The initial request for the clinic was made by Julieta Mendez, director of the Immigration Clinic of Catholic Charities in Jackson, in consultation with Father O’Connor.
“This parish is ready to offer assistance to Hispanics to enable them to deal with practical challenges that face them in adjusting to this culture,” Father O’Connor said.
He said the assistance might include after-school tutorial help for Hispanic children in local schools, evening classes in English for adults, a center to assemble for socials, and a welcoming environment for a planning committee or council of Hispanic people,” he said. Presentations during the day were given on Mexicans’ rights, financial issues, education for children, and child care.
