Father Nutt begins tour for
`Thea Bowman, In My Own Words’

By Fabvienen Taylor
JACKSON — “It is quite appropriate for me to begin this 20-city book tour in the Diocese of Jackson where everything began for Thea,” said Redemptorist Father Maurice Nutt, CSsR, on Saturday, Feb. 14.
“And it is appropriate for it to begin on Valentine’s Day, because I love Thea so much,” he said.
Father Nutt led a prayer service honoring Sister Thea Bowman at Christ the King Church to launch the book-signing tour of “Thea Bowman, In My Own Words.”
The 113-page book, compiled and edited by Father Nutt, is divided into themes, or chapters, and includes “Go Down Moses (The Wisdom of the `Old Folks),” “Give Me That Old Time Religion (On Being Black and Catholic),” “O Mary Don’t You Weep Don’t You Mourn (Hope),” “Give Me Jesus (Jesus and Justice),” and “Deep River (Living With Suffering and Dying).”
Father Nutt, 46, met Sister Bowman in 1984 at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in New Orleans.
“I was a traditional Catholic, comfortable in the European Catholic Church. Thea set me free to learn about the richness of my black Catholic faith. Blame her for the way I am.”
Father Nutt has a doctor of ministry degree from the Aquinas Institute of Theology and is a widely known preacher nationally and internationally.
He is pastor of Holy Names of Jesus and Mary Church in Memphis.
The book is $14.95 and is published by Liguoiri Publications.
