JACKSON — “This was the best golf tournament we ever had and the one where we grossed the most money,” said George Roman, director of the Office of Stewardship and the Catholic Foundation.
Roman said the 2008 Bishop’s Cup Golf Tournament raised $20,000 with registration fees, auction donators and sponsors. The tournament was held at Colonial Country Club. It was the tournament’s 26th year.
“Looks like we will be able to give $11,000 to the newly-established Catholic Charities Victims of Abuse Trust with the foundation. The rest will be used for expenses, operational and adminstrative costs for the foundation,” he said. The trust was established in honor of Linda Raff, who retired after 29 years as executive director of Catholic Charities.
Roman said people who were not golfing this year were asked to make a direct contribution to the trust. Eighty golfers entered the tournament and 122 people attended the dinner/social Wednesday evening.
Tournament winner Greenwood Immaculate Heart of Mary took the Bishop’s Cup back home with them, having won it last year. Greenwood and St. Richard Parish have each won the cup four times.
“Greenwood had three teams this year,” said Roman. “They came to win and they did.”
This was my last tournament and it was the best ever,” said Roman, who will retire when a replacement is hired. “Everything went off just great.”
