Sign up Sunday for Why Catholic?
MADISON —Over the next few weeks parishioners in 75 of the 102 parishes and missions in the Diocese of Jackson will be signing up in their parishes for the first season of the “Why Catholic? Journey through the Catechism” program.
“Why Catholic?” is a program of evangelization and adult faith formation developed by Renew International in response to a growing demand for practical tools for adult catechesis and concrete approaches for evangelization.
On Sign-up Sunday, scheduled by most parishes Sept. 13-14, people in parishes will be invited to sign up to take part in the small groups.
Prayer Commitment Sunday will be held the weekend of Sept. 27-28 when children and persons not participating in the small groups will be asked to commit to pray for the success of “Why Catholic?” in their parish.
Season one runs from Sunday, Oct. 12, to Saturday, Nov. 22. Season two will begin in Lent 2009. Earlier this year, small group leaders, or facilitators, attended a workshop to launch the program and a second one on the nuts and bolts of evangelization, according to Alice Hughes, director of the Office of Faith Formation.
The first two seasons of the program will focus on “The Profession of Faith: What We Believe.”
“Why Catholic?” is a four-year process, with eight seasons, according to Hughes. “It is a process of breaking open the catechism,” she said.
Developed by Renew International as a means to foster the goals of “Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us,” the U. S. bishops’ pastoral letter on adult faith formation, the process explores Catholic teachings based on the four pillars of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” — profession of faith, sacraments of faith, the life of faith, Christian prayer — and Scripture.
The process, offered in both English and Spanish, offers participants the opportunity to discuss and learn more about their faith in small parish groups.
