Next Spring Hill extension course
examines John’s Gospel, Epistles JACKSON — “Johannine Gospel and Epistles” is the title of Spring Hill College fall course. The course will examine the unique contribution of the Johannine Gospel and Letters to the New Testament Canon. Topics of discussion include the origins of the traditions that make up the Gospel, and the final structure and outline of the Gospel, the historical/religious setting of the Johannine community, and the unique theology of the community.
Course dates are Saturdays, Sept. 6, 20; Oct. 4, 18; and Nov. 1, 15, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at St. Joseph School in Madison, 308 New Mannsdale Road.
Tuition is $270 per credit hour
Dr. Thomas Boone, who recently completed his doctorate in biblical studies at Loyola University of Chicago, will be the instructor. His dissertation was a study of the breech with Judaism in the Gospel of John.
Dr. Boone will use various methodologies for careful exegesis, especially focusing on the historical critical method, forms of narrative criticism, and word studies, in order to examine a selection of important passages in the Gospel of John and the Johnnine Letters.
Dr. Boone has written articles for the Dictionary of Historical Theology and has served as an associate pastor in the Presbyterian Church. The past two years, Dr. Boone has taught as an adjunct professor of theology at Spring Hill College.
The winter course, THL 552/353 (Moral) “Human Sexuality and Marriage,” will be offered Dec 6, 13; Jan. 10, 24, 31 and Feb 14, 2009.
“Philosophy for Theology,” THL 540/499 (Systematic) is set for Feb. 28; March 14, 28; April 4, 18, May 2, 2009.
