Sister Thea Bowman School receives book donation JACKSON — Sister Thea Bowman School recently received a generous gift from the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation. In an effort to encourage young children to inherit a life long love of reading, over 200 books were donated to area schools and child care centers. Sister Thea Bowman School received a total of 45 books at the Foundation’s news conference on Friday, May 9, at the Medical Mall. The donated books are designated for Pre-K and Kindergarten students.
“There is no better gift to give a child than education,” said Kelli Sharpe, director of community outreach for the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation. “Reading is fundamental, and is the building block to a solid education. The books we are donating will inspire these young beautiful minds that are thirsty for knowledge at three, four, and five years of age to a life long love of reading,” she said. “The sky is truly the limit for them and the foundation wants to be a part of their growth and development into productive young people.”
Following the news conference, Dawn Merchant, the school’s kindergarten teacher, and fellow Thea Bowman School Pre-K3 teacher Ethel Jimerson conducted a teacher/student demonstration with the new books.
The books focus on learning the alphabet, picture clues to read words, and phonics. The assortment of books features colorful illustrations in both fiction and non-fiction paperback. Fiction titles for pre-K include Fruit for you; Look at My Home, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Farm Friends and more.
Fiction and non-fiction titles for Kindergarten include What is Fun, What Feels cold?, What is Quite?, Let’s Play Ball, and others. Each book is 16 pages with story print and full color photographs or drawings.
