Spring Hill sets summer institute dates
MOBILE — Dates for the Spring Hill College annual Summer springhill Institute of Christian Spirituality in Mobile are: Session I, June 1-7 and Session II, June 8-14.
In Atlanta, the institute will be held June 22-27 and June 28-July3.
In Mobile, an individually directed retreat will be held the week prior to Session I, for either five or eight days, beginning the evening of May 24 and ending the morning of May 31.
Retreat dates do not conflict with institute courses. The retreat follows the dynamics of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.
Faculty, graduates and interns of the Certificate of Spiritual Direction program will act as directors for the retreat.
This year’s featured instructors are Dr. Tim Carmody, Father John Donahue, SJ, and Dr. John Switzer.
The institute is designed for adults seeking both spiritual enrichment and intellectual challenge. Taught in the Jesuit tradition of excellence, courses may be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit or on an audit basis (no required assignments and no grade).
Dr. Carmody will offer again this year a non-credit Colloquy, “The Call of Discipleship in the Gospel of Mark.” It will meet three evenings during Session I and have no required readings or assignments.
Pat Warren, coordinator of the institute, said the colloquium on Biblical spirituality will be a great exchange of ideas for those who have graduated and miss the classroom and a “gentle” re-introduction to college for those who have been away for a while.
Dr. Carmody has taught at SHC since 1989. His area of concentration is narrative criticism of the Gospels.
The curriculum is made up of a series of one-credit courses in one-week sessions, studying a variety of spiritual masters and mystics, along with biblical, liturgical and social themes. The academic coursework is enhanced by the cultivation of a faith community, through daily liturgical prayer and personal sharing.
While rooted in Catholic theology, the program is fully ecumenical and welcomes persons of all faiths.
Those who have never attended Spring Hill College or the institute, and wish to receive more information about the event, can e-mail Pat Warren, coordinator, Institute of Christian Spirituality at pwarren@shc.edu or call 800-5248957.
