Relay team cited for spirit
JACKSON — St. Therese Parish’s Relay for Life team, “Lucy’s Lucky Ladies,” received the Team Spirit Award from the South Hinds American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Byram April 11-12.
The 19 team members raised the second largest amount of money, $4,100, during their first year of participation. Snoop Dawgs, from Byram Middle School raised the most money at just over $5,000.
Seventeen teams and 74 persons participated in the relay that began at 6 p.m. Friday, and ended at 6 p.m. Saturday.
St. Therese team included members of Madonna Circle and St. Therese School. Brenda Singletary, a member of Madonna Circle, walked as a survivor and Sister Brenda Monahan, principal of St. Therese School, and Sister Deborah Hughes, superintendent of schools, were also on the team.
Six members of Lucy’s Lucky Ladies stayed the entire 24 hours.
The first ceremonial lap was lead by the Boy Scouts, followed by the survivors and teams. Country Woods Baptist Church of Byram hosted the event.
A luminarie ceremony on Friday evening honored cancer survivors and those who lost their lives to cancer. Paper luminaries inscribed with names were purchased by participants and lit while all other lights on the field were turned off.
Lucy’s Lucky Ladies also won three contests: the Wacky Hat, the Sweet Midnight Snack and the Best Theme Blanky. Their contestant, Rusty Kemp, tied in the Womanless Beauty Contest.
Several local Christian rock bands played during the day including: “Nailed Glory,” “One Eye Open,” and “A Love Not Lost. “
The event included a Scavenger Hunt at 2 a.m., a pajama lap at 4 a.m. and a KidZone.
