JACKSON — Celebrating its tenth year, Manhattan Mall, the annual service project for St. Richard Elementary School sixth-graders, was held Thursday and Friday, Dec. 13-14, at Manhattan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Holly Drive, across from the school.
For the last 10 years, St. Richard sixth-graders have created an actual “shopping mall” at the center.
Many of the residents are not able to leave the center and shop for Christmas presents for their children or grandchildren, so the sixth graders bring the stores to the residents.
Each resident received Manhattan Mall money to personally purchase gifts for their families and friends, thus allowing them to feel independent. Once the residents purchased their items, they had the option of having the gifts wrapped.
Students are responsible for all aspects of this service project. They must collect over 1,300 donated items, sort them into departments, stock shelves, help residents shop and wrap gifts.
