Msgr. Michael Glynn dies in Jackson
JACKSON – Msgr. Michael Joseph Glynn, 88, died on Monday, Nov. 12. A native of Knockbrack, Athenry in County Galway, Ireland, Msgr. Glynn served as a priest in Mississippi for 61 years.
Ordained in 1946 for the Diocese of Natchez, Msgr. Glynn served the church in the communities of Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, Belzoni, Pascagoula, Jackson and Brookhaven. He was the founding pastor of Holy Family Parish in Jackson in 1957.
Msgr. Glynn also served the Carmelite Monastery in Jackson as confessor and the Diocese of Jackson as a dean, consultor, member of the Priests’ Council, and promoter of justice for the Marriage Tribunal. In 1976, he received the title of honorary prelate (monsignor) from Pope Paul VI.
At the time of his death, Msgr. Glynn was in residence at St. Richard Parish, where he came to serve in 1981 as associate pastor. In 1993, he reached senior priest status, though he remained very active in hospital ministry, having served as Catholic chaplain at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital.
Though officially retiring in 2001, Msgr. Glynn continued to visit the sick in hospitals and the children at St. Richard School.
Msgr. Glynn was known for his witty outlook on church life. On numerous occasions when there might have been some disagreements among parishioners he was heard to remark, “It’s a great church.” Soon after that the disagreements would subside.
A Prayer Vigil, presided over by Bishop William Houck, retired bishop of Jackson, will be held Friday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. at St. Richard Church. Bishop Joseph Latino will celebrate a Memorial Mass for Msgr. Glynn on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. at the church.
Msgr. Glynn is survived by his sister, Norah Glynn (a religious sister) of Dublin, Ireland; sister-in-law, Joan Woods of Waltham, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
