Old/new columnists hit spotlight
JACKSON — As Mississippi Catholic congratulates columnist George Valadie for winning honorable mention recognition from the Catholic Press Association (CPA), the newspaper also welcomes George Evans as a new columnist this week.
In its annual competition the CPA recognized Valadie in the category of Best Regular Column on Family Life for his column “Praying for Perspective,” which appears every other week in Mississippi Catholic.
Valadie, who began writing the column when he was principal at Vicksburg St. Aloysius High School, said “It’s really exciting to have been chosen, but I’m especially grateful to Mississippi Catholic for allowing me this opportunity to share my thoughts, feelings and family for these past 10 years.”
Valadie is president of St. Benedict at Auburndale School in Cordova, Tenn.
Evans, a retired attorney, is a pastoral minister at Jackson St. Richard Parish and has served on the advisory board for Mississippi Catholic for some time.
One of his first projects at St. Richard’s last fall was to lead a workshop, “Catholic Social Teachings and the Life of Prayer and Sacrament,” for fellow parishioners and other area Catholics. He used a little book entitled “Catholic Social Teaching, Our Best Kept Secret.”
“My thesis in my column, ‘Complete the Circle,’” he said, “is that social mission is also a constitutive element of church for the Catholic. Like Scripture, sacrament and prayer it is not optional.
“We need to catechize accordingly and the best kept secret will be secret no longer.”
Evans’ column can be found on page 11 this week.
