Christ the King welcomes new priest
SOUTHAVEN – Father Joseph Thi Pham, SCJ, who has served as transitional deacon at Southaven Christ the King Catholic Church since last fall, celebrated his ordination to the presbyterate as a priest of the Sacred Heart in services at St. Luke Parish in San Antonio.
Bishop William Houck, retired bishop emeritus of Jackson, presided at Father Thi’s ordination, which also included Father Gregory Speck, SCJ, pastor of Christ the King, with whom Father Thi is serving his priest mentorship.
Father Thi is a native of Vietnam who came to the United States in 1991, attending San Antonio College for two years after graduating from high school. He joined the Priests of the Sacred Heart Formation Program in 1996 and graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio in 2000.
He entered the novitiate following his graduation and continued his theology studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, from which he graduated with a master of divinity degree. He made his final religious profession in May 2006 and was ordained a deacon Aug. 12, 2006, at Sacred Heart Monastery, Hales Corners, Wis.
In addition to his pastorate at Christ the King, Father Thi is involved with the Vietnamese community at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Memphis. Among his duties is conducting the Vietnamese choir.
